LEARN TO MEDITATE

What is Meditation?

Meditation is the practice of regulating our mind, thoughts and our attention, to achieve a state of calm, rest and quietness within. The idea of meditation is to mindfully observe our thoughts and slowly reduce the number of thoughts and mind chatter contained within our head. We have on average 50, 000 thoughts a day and our aim when staring our meditation journey is to start reducing this high number of thoughts, which is achieved by practicing various mindfulness techniques and using breath awareness exercises.

Regular meditation practice develops calmness, clarity and concentration within our mind, it also starts to alter the way we live our daily life; reducing anxiety and stress. Meditation can appear to be a difficult practice when first staring, however it is a simple practice that allows us to obtain better health and a happier life. Those who discover meditation also discover the benefits of it.

The end goal of our meditation practice is to achieve a state of mind that is ‘empty’ with ‘no thought,’ often referred to as the ‘bliss state.’ However when starting meditation for the first time most people have high expectations that they need to achieve this ‘bliss state’ right away. Emptying the mind comes with patience and practice. Meditation is like learning any new skill, it takes time, patience and practice for us to fully develop and learn a new skillset, especially when our busy minds contain 50, 000 thoughts a day.

The Difficulties Of Meditation

As we start our meditation journey we can become judgemental about the way we are practicing meditation. We may believe that we are doing it ‘wrong,’ doubting ourselves by ‘thinking too much,’ or occupy the idea that ‘meditation is not for me.’ Fixating too much on the results can lead to greater anxiety, which weakens the benefits of meditation. Meditation takes time and patience with ourselves; the busier our lives are, the more thoughts fill our head. With regular meditation we start to feel less stressed, more accepting of ourselves and at greater peace.
